A Demat account is your storehouse of all the securities. It holds these securities in the digital format. Any trader who wants to trade in the stock market in India needs to open a demat account. Here we take you through the procedure of opening a demat account.

How to open a Demat Account?

  1. First, you need to choose a depository participant which is registered with SEBI. you need to see if the Depository is registered with NSDL or CSDL. You can open a demat account with either of them.
  2. Next up, you need to fill the account opening form and submit the required set of documents.
  3. Then you have to co-operate for the in-person verification where a person from the DP’s office will contact you to verify all the details.
  4. If the verification is successful and the documents submitted are all correct then you receive your Id and Password and the account is opened.

What are the documents required to open a Demat Account?

The set of documents that you need to submit for opening a demat account online are as follows:

1. Income Proof

Income proof documents can be your salary slips, income tax return acknowledgment slips, current 6-month bank account statements etc.

2. Identity Proof

An identity proof can be any government registered document with your photo. List of documents which can be used as Proof of Identity:

  • Passport
  • Driving license
  • Voter’s identity card
  • Aadhaar card
  • PAN card

 

3. Address Proof

An address proof can be any government-issued document which has your address on it. List of documents which can be used as Proof of Address:

  • Passport
  • Voter’s identity card
  • Driving license
  • Bank passbook or bank statement
  • Utility bills such as electricity bills or landline phone bills
  • Leave and license agreement or agreement for sale

4. Bank account Proof

These can be your bank statements, passbooks etc.

5. Passport-sized Photograph

This is mandatory for any application process.
