Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty hints at higher start; Asian peers rally on Fed rate cut hopes

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are set to open higher on Monday, supported by positive cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 24,983.50 in early deals.

Domestic markets are expected to start the holiday-shortened week on a firm note, mirroring gains in Asian peers as investors anticipate a possible US Federal Reserve rate cut in September.

On Friday, however, benchmark indices ended lower, snapping a six-day winning streak, with the Nifty 50 closing below 24,900 amid broad-based selling pressure, except in media and pharma stocks.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 81306.85 down by -693.86 points or by -0.85 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24870.1 down by -213.65 points or by -0.85 %.

On the global front, In Asian markets, stock markets rallied as Fed Chair Jerome Powell left the door open for rate cuts in the Jackson Hole summit in Wyoming on Friday. Australian stocks benchmark gauge hit a fresh record; China's CSI 300 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng were up over 1 per cent; Japan's Nikkei was up 0.7 per cent last checked.

Wall Street's main indexes ended higher on Friday, with the blue-chip Dow hitting a record closing high, as investors piled into stocks after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell hinted at a near-term interest-rate cut during his Jackson Hole Symposium speech.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 846.24 points, or 1.89%, to 45,631.74, surpassing its most recent record close on December 4, 2024. The S&P 500 gained 96.74 points, or 1.52%, to 6,466.91, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 396.22 points, or 1.88%, to 21,496.54.

Total numbers of contracts for index options were 60620270 with a total turnover of Rs. 11454687.90 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 7797446 with a total turnover of Rs. 556571.77 Crore.

The FIIs on 22/08/2025 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 12804.06 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 788.23 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 13366.40 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 928.53 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -562.34 Crore and Rs. -140.30
