Post Session: Sensex gains 650 pts, Nifty ends at 25,682; Banks shine

The benchmark indices rose notably on Monday despite lackluster cues from global markets and continued declines in IT stocks on AI disruption fears. In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap and the Nifty SmallCap were up 0.48 per cent and 0.11 per cent, respectively.

Overseas, Asian stocks ended mixed in thin trade on Monday, with China, South Korea and Taiwan closed for Lunar New Year holidays. Japanese markets fell slightly and the yen eased after posting its strongest weekly gain in about 15 months.

Whereas European stocks edged higher on Monday, though trading volumes remained thin amid a holiday in the United States for Presidents' Day. The German DAX gained 0.3 percent, France's CAC 40 edged up by 0.1 percent and the U.K.'s FTSE 100 was up 0.2 percent.

Meanwhile, Oil prices were little changed as investors weighed prospects of OPEC+ supply increases and awaited upcoming U.S.-Iran talks aimed at de-escalating tensions.

On the corporate front, Precision Wires India surged 17 per cent to a fresh high on Monday and Power Grid Corp shares rallied 4.5 percent. While Bajaj Finance, Maruti Suzuki India and Tech Mahindra all fell over 1 percent.

The 30-share benchmark index closed trading at 83277.15 up by 650.39 points or by 0.79 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25682.75 up by 211.65 points or by 0.83 %.

During the day’s trade, Sensex touched intraday high of 83333.49 and intraday low of 82276.95 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 25697 and intraday low of 25372.70.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Kwality Wall's (India) Ltd. (Rs. 29.51,+2851.00%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 300.20,+4.45%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 925.45,+2.19%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1359.50,+1.93%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 369.10,+1.69%), among others.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1513.10,-1.44%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 15055.10,-1.13%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 1013.00,-1.08%), Trent Ltd. (Rs. 4218.30,-0.78%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 3509.40,-0.69%), among others were the losers.

Power index was at 6874.84 up by 161.27 points or by 2.4%. Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 300.20,+4.45%), Adani Green Energy Ltd. (Rs. 991.05,+4.26%), Siemens Ltd. (Rs. 3217.45,+3.18%), JSW Energy Ltd. (Rs. 489.55,+3.13%), GE Vernova T&D India Ltd. (Rs. 3663.60,+3.03%),.

On the flip side, Auto index was at 62092.46 down by -496.21 points or by -0.79%. UNO Minda Ltd. (Rs. 1213.85,-2.35%), MRF Ltd. (Rs. 146925.35,-2.11%), Apollo Tyres Ltd. (Rs. 479.35,-2.07%), TVS Motor Company Ltd. (Rs. 3800.00,-1.67%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 5493.45,-1.54%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4674 , shares advanced were 1875 while 2594 shares declined and 205 were unchanged.
