Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty signals positive start; Asian mkts mixed

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are expected to open on a positive note on February 2, supported by firm cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading higher near the 24,879 mark ahead of the session.

However, the previous trading day remained highly volatile due to the Union Budget announcements. On February 1, domestic equities closed in the red, with the Nifty slipping below the 24,600 level intraday after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed an increase in the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on equity futures and options (F&O) trades, dampening investor sentiment.

On Sunday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 80722.94 down by -1546.84 points or by -1.88 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24825.45 down by -495.2 points or by -1.96 %.

On the global front, Asian markets showed a mixed trend in early trade as investors awaited private data for China’s factory activity in January, while gold continued to decline and extended losses from Friday.

As of the last check, Mainland China’s CSI 300 rose 0.01 percent, while Japan’s Nikkei was up 0.75 percent. However, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 1.34 per cent, and South Korea’s KOSPI fell 2.63 per cent.

On Friday, Wall Street indices ended lower even as investors largely approved of President Donald Trump’s pick of Kevin Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve. At close, the S&P 500 was down 0.43 per cent, the Nasdaq 0.94 per cent, and the Dow Jones 0.36 per cent.
