Pre-Session: Gap-up start likely for Sensex, Nifty on Israel-Iran ceasefire

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are expected to open on a positive note today, June 24, tracking cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 25,164 earlier this morning. A gap-up opening is likely, supported by global sentiment improvement following a major geopolitical development.

US President Donald Trump announced a "complete and total" ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, potentially bringing an end to the nearly two-week-long conflict in West Asia. As per the announcement, Iran will initiate a 12-hour ceasefire starting midnight Tuesday (EST), followed by Israel, with a full cessation of hostilities expected by Wednesday midnight if the truce holds.

On Monday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 81896.79 down by -511.38 points or by -0.62 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24971.9 down by -140.5 points or by -0.56 %.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading higher on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump announced that Iran and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire. South Korea's Kospi surged 2.5 per cent, and Taiwan rallied 2 per cent. Japan's Nikkei surged over 1 per cent. Hang Seng and Straits Times were up around 0.7 per cent each.

Overnight in the US, stocks ended on a firm note ahead of ceasefire news. Dow Jones, Nasdaq and the S&P 500 gained close to 1 per cent each.

The US markets ended with a nearly one percent gain on Monday.
