Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty signals muted start for Sensex, Nifty; Asia mixed

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are expected to open on a flat to positive note on June 5, taking cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 24,729 earlier this morning.

Day 2 of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, along with key global macroeconomic data, institutional activity, and mixed global cues, is likely to influence the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty today.

On Wednesday, Indian benchmark indices ended higher, snapping a three-day losing streak, with the Nifty closing above 24,600 amid positive global cues and broad-based buying across sectors, except for realty.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 80998.25 up by 260.74 points or by 0.32 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24620.2 up by 77.7 points or by 0.32 %.

On the global front, Asian shares opened cautiously after weak US economic data reinforced expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts this year.

Nikkei was flat with a negative bias, while Topix was down 0.5 per cent. Kospi gained 0.95 per cent, ASX 200 rose 0.2 per cent.

US stocks ended mixed on Wednesday, with the benchmark S&P 500 flat, the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite slightly up and the Dow Jones Industrial Average down as weak data revealed the economic toll taken by President Donald Trump's trade policies.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 91.90 points, or 0.22%, to 42,427.74, the S&P 500 gained 0.44 points, or 0.01%, to 5,970.81 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 61.53 points, or 0.32%, to 19,460.49.
