Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty suggests a positive start; US, Asian markets gain

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 are likely to open higher on January 20, tracking cues from GIFT Nifty trading around 23,281.50, a short while ago this morning.

The Indian market snapped three-day winning streak and ended lower with Nifty around 23,200 amid selling in IT and banking names despite the sector biggies Infosys and Axis Bank posted better numbers for the quarter ended December.

However, gains in Reliance Industries, post reporting higher profit, helped to limit the losses.

On Friday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 76619.33 down by -423.49 points or by -0.55 % and then NSE Nifty was at 23203.2 down by -108.6 points or by -0.47 %.

On the global front, Markets in the Asia-Pacific region also traded higher on Monday, ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration with investors awaiting greater clarity on the policies of the incoming US administration.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose 1.39 per cent, while mainland China’s CSI 300 inched 1.15 per cent higher as China left its benchmark lending rates unchanged on Monday.

All three of Wall Street's major indices were up for the day while the S&P 500 and the Dow registered their biggest weekly gains since the week of the US presidential election. The Nasdaq scored its biggest weekly advance since early December.
