Tata Power builds 2.8 GW-Plus Data Centre Pipeline, strengthens Focus on India's AI Infrastructure

Tata Power is expanding its presence in India's rapidly growing data centre sector, with an opportunity pipeline exceeding 2.8 GW across renewable energy, transmission and distribution. The company is engaging with 18 leading domestic and global data centre operators to support the country's expanding artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and digital infrastructure requirements.

Beyond conventional power supply, Tata Power is positioning itself as an integrated infrastructure partner, offering solutions spanning powered land, grid connectivity, transmission infrastructure, renewable energy, energy storage, cooling systems and other utility services for hyperscale and next-generation data centres.

The company's pipeline comprises around 430 MW of prospective load under its distribution network, 1,236 MW of transmission-linked opportunities and 1,150 MW of green energy capacity under active engagement. With 29 ongoing workstreams involving 18 major data centre operators, Tata Power aims to support the development of large-scale digital infrastructure and AI-ready facilities.

Its presence across the power value chain, covering generation, transmission and distribution, provides an advantage in meeting the energy requirements of data centre projects.

In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Tata Power is upgrading its 110 kV and 220 kV transmission networks to accommodate rising electricity demand from hyperscale data centres. The company is enhancing transmission and transformation capacities, strengthening network redundancy and developing new receiving stations to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted power supply.

It is also progressing with a 400 kV transmission ring network to improve grid resilience and prepare the region for future digital infrastructure expansion. These initiatives form part of Tata Power's Rs 15,000 crore Mumbai Grid Upgradation and Expansion Plan.

India's growing ambitions in AI and digital services are expected to significantly increase electricity consumption. According to estimates by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), cited by the Ministry of Power, AI-driven data centres could add approximately 26.3 GW to India's electricity demand by FY2031-32.

With demand for computing capacity and reliable energy infrastructure expected to rise, Tata Power is seeking to strengthen its role in powering India's emerging AI and data centre ecosystem.
