The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the implementation of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) in Delhi at an estimated cost of Rs 1,789.52 crore, including taxes.
The project, to be implemented by Delhi Police, will cover 42 major traffic corridors and is scheduled to be rolled out in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operations and maintenance.
The technology-driven system will use real-time traffic monitoring, adaptive traffic signals, automated enforcement and integrated command-and-control centres to improve the utilisation of Delhi's existing road network.
The project will include 1,092 adaptive traffic control locations and 1,029 enforcement locations. It will enable dynamic signal management, priority movement for ambulances and emergency vehicles, faster detection of congestion and accidents, and real-time updates for commuters through variable message signs and digital platforms.
The system will also strengthen automated enforcement of violations such as red-light jumping, speeding, wrong-way driving, illegal parking and non-use of helmets and seat belts. AI-based analytics will support the identification of stolen or blacklisted vehicles and repeat offenders.
The project will integrate traffic regulation, enforcement and information services through Traffic Command and Control Centres, supported by secure data and disaster-recovery infrastructure.
