HCC secures Rs 127 crore Hydropower Contract in Bhutan

Construction major Hindustan Construction Company has secured a Rs 127 crore contract from Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited for construction works related to the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan.

The project scope includes the construction of diversion tunnels, hydromechanical gates, and cofferdams, with completion scheduled within nine months. The contract was awarded following WHPL's technical and financial evaluation process, highlighting HCC's expertise in executing complex hydropower projects in challenging terrains.

The diversion works are crucial for facilitating the early start of the project's main civil construction activities and ensuring adherence to the overall project timeline.

Bhutan's hydropower sector is expected to witness strong growth under its 13th Five-Year Plan (2024–29), with the government targeting 6,000 MW of installed capacity through continued investments in large hydroelectric projects.

HCC has maintained a presence in Bhutan for over three decades and has contributed to several major hydropower projects, including Tala Hydroelectric Project, Kurichu Hydroelectric Project, Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project, Dagachhu Hydropower Project, and Nikachhu Hydropower Project. The company has also executed projects accounting for approximately 26% of India's installed hydropower capacity
