Adani Power Acquires VIPL for Rs 4,000 cr, Capacity Rises to 18,150 MW

Adani Power Ltd. (APL), India’s largest private thermal power producer, has successfully completed the acquisition and implementation of the resolution plan for Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd. (VIPL), a 600 MW coal-based power plant in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The transaction, valued at ?4,000 crore, marks a significant addition to Adani Power’s growing portfolio and follows approval from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Mumbai Bench on June 18, 2025. The resolution plan was fully executed by July 7, 2025.

Located in Butibori, Nagpur district, VIPL comprises two units of 300 MW each and was undergoing the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). With this acquisition, Adani Power’s total operational capacity now stands at 18,150 MW.

The company is also aggressively expanding its power generation capacity with a target of reaching 30,670 MW by 2029–30. This includes the construction of six brownfield ultra-supercritical thermal power plants (USCTPP) of 1,600 MW each across its sites in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, as well as a greenfield USCTPP of 1,600 MW in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, it is reviving the construction of a previously acquired 1,320 MW supercritical power plant in Korba, Chhattisgarh.

Commenting on the development, Adani Power CEO SB Khyalia said, “The acquisition of VIPL is a key milestone in Adani Power’s strategy to unlock value through the turnaround of stressed assets. As we continue to expand our portfolio, we remain committed to supporting India’s vision of ‘Electricity for All’ by delivering reliable, affordable base-load power that fuels the country’s sustainable growth.”

This strategic acquisition reaffirms Adani Power's position as a dominant force in India’s power sector and underscores its long-term vision of contributing to the nation’s energy security through high-efficiency, large-scale generation capacity.
